The basic pension system, introduced since 2014 to secure the minimum income for the elderly, has changed the income level and income composition of the elderly. This study examined how income and income composition of elderly households changed after the introduction of basic pension, analyzing two waves of the National Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs in 2008(N=9,790) and 2017 (N=10,299). To find out whether these changes differ among the elderly by gender and household type males living alone, females living alone, and married couples were compared. The results confirmed that basic pensions have become an important source of income for the elderly living alone regardless of gender, however women living alone were still highly dependent on private transfer. Married couples had higher dependence on labor income and public transfer than those living alone. The differences in income composition after the introduction of basic pensions by gender and household type is described and practical implications are suggested based on the results.
